Judge’s Report for the third quarter of the humour verse competition 2012 from John Hegley

The Legacy gives the afterglow of a job well done by Great Britain at the Olympics. It is a catalogue of the island's fizzing busyness of 2012, from pub to toddlers' club, together with the author's own involvement and a gleeful look to the future.

It is a cheery testament with a bright British flavour and a nifty ending which playfully reminds us, that we might have thought it was all over, but in South America it has already begun. I welcomed the couplets in italics...a small, good, formal departure.

Picnic Time has a canny 'reveal' and the language romps stridently forth. The poem's 'ricochet' into the river does not make strict sense, but its alliterative music is pleasing to nullify objection.

This acceptance of effect over meaning occurs again in Phoebe's Folly, where Miss Heffer is introduced to set up a chiming with all growing deafer, in a tight and pacey piece of storytelling.

In terms of future competitions, I would look forward to the possibility of experimental rhyming and perhaps more verses that plumb the personal and the political whilst still keeping a smile on their faces.

Meanwhile my thanks for this box of fireworks.
