Judge’s Report for the second quarter of the humour verse competition 2012 from Barbara Scott-Emmett

Many thanks to Lorraine for allowing me to judge the Humour Verse competition this time. I have to say it has been a delightful, but by no means easy, task. Many of the entries are worthy of publication but I chose the short list on the basis that they made me laugh, giggle or at least smile the first time I read them.

When it came to choosing the winners, I also looked for rhythm, word use, and originality. All those shortlisted were amusing so narrowing the list down to three winners was difficult. Humour is also very subjective and another judge may have made different choices. These, however, are mine.

I put Smartie in first place for its sheer exuberance and originality of subject matter. The poem bounces along merrily and the images conjured up made me laugh. Well done for producing such a light-hearted fun poem.

I picked A Dramatic Interlude for second place because it made me chuckle – the crusty buns did it – and the idea was wickedly well conveyed.

In Bon Appétit, taking third place, the sting is in the tail. After a voluptuous description of food we get the mundane reality of the payoff and a knowing laugh at the truth of it.

I would also, if I may, like to give honourable mentions to Circulus Vitiosis for its wordplay, to Graffiti for its great last line, and to the cheeky Out in the Open for its, well, cheekiness. Thanks to all entrants for giving me such an entertaining time.
